Tethered Aerostat

Between Deming and the Mexican border is the USAF Tethered Aerostat Radar Site

We frequently see the balloon in the air but, this is the first we've taken the drive to see it first hand at ground level.

Inside is surveillance radar used to sight low flying aircraft and surface targets.
This huge "balloon" supports the Department of Defense Counterdrug Program.

The mooring system has a large winch and 25,000 feet of cable.
Pretty impressive.
