San Mateo Mtns. and the Monticello Box

After a cold and blustery day yesterday, today dawned nearly perfect.
We headed out towards the San Mateos once again but stuck to the lower elevations - mostly under 7,000ft.
This is grassland, rolling hills
and sheer beauty.

The higher peaks from Saturday are ahead.

Down the hill to the left ....

in the upper right quadrant of the photo is the roadway that we eventually follow.

But first a stop at Garcia Falls.

It's not often that a real waterfall is found in the desert, particularly one that isn't seasonal.

From the top we drove down the diagonal shelf road you see here.
Can you spot the Jeep?

The Apache Trail
The gate is locked and only hoof and foot traffic is allowed beyond.
Nice rock cairn

Open range

The beginning of Monticello Box Canyon.  Next time through we'll have to measure the distance from beginning to end - at least a couple of miles, and the number of times we crossed Alamosa Creek.

Most are windshield photos taken on the move.

After dropping me off, Vic backed into the canyon for this photo op.

There was no other traffic all day until we saw two vehicles on this road as we were leaving.
It's a fantastic feeling to have all this beauty with no human interference.
