Snow Playday in the Spring Mountains - January 23, 2010

Experiencing an El Nino year is just that, an experience. This past week we had four days of rain - yes, four days. The final day the staff left early in order to make it home. After closing Vic and I went out to see what we could see. It was just ugly enough that we didn't stray too far. Road surfaces get really, really slick. Keep in mind that when I shot these two photos we had not yet had our four day total of 1.1" of rain and that the hard rain was yet to come in a few short hours......Even this coyote doesn't look too happy. These two photos look in the same general direction just two mornings later. The mountains, part of the Funeral Range are six miles distant.
The run began in Pahrump behind the shopping area. Clouds were ongoing and moved in and out on us all day.
Here a few of the fellows got out to throw the first snowballs of the day.
It's getting deeper but, so far, no problem for anyone. Someone suggested that the first to go into 4-wheel drive would get the rubber chicken. No one ever confessed to being first.
The destination was Wheeler Well but we never quite made it - however not because we didn't have a few stalwart members. The snow, where we turned around, was over 18" deep. And there was at least another 6" packed under our tires. We heard a report that Mount Charleston, the highest point in the Spring Mtns, had 47". Tammy and Shirlee below.
Snow is a fun experience in the desert. Folks load up the ATV's and the kids and drive into the mountains to spend the day playing.
A point where good sense won out over adventure. Well, good sense won out a wee bit further into this climb before backing down. It was worth a try.
The nicest thing about snow in the desert is leaving it behind at the end of the day and returning to dry land.
At Jerry's suggestion we took a small detour to a canyon we had not seen previously.
It narrowed to a point where we had to park and walk - well worth it.

Owl Head Mountains - January 16, 2010

Jerry was the leader this day for a trip into the Owl Head Mountain region. We grouped at the gas station in Shoshone, CA where gas prices are even higher than in Death Valley National Park. On this particular day the price is $1.18 higher than in NV at our usual fuel stop. The photos speak for themselves. The entire day was one sensational view after another!
Owl Hole Spring
The New Deal where manganese was mined.
Black Magic Mine - more manganese
All 8 participants stopped for dinner at the Crow Bar. For the first time we ate in the bar where we got to see the illustrious crow for whom the bar was named.
