Grapevine Spring, adjacent to the refuge, with the snow-covered Panamint Range in the background.
Checking out a "road" while planning a run for the Jeep club. What fun!
Rock cairns are everywhere - even in the most inaccessible places
Kathie Taylor and I enjoyed part of a perfect afternoon out on the refuge locating a few archaeology sites.
The blue moon rising New Years Eve 2009
This is not green cheese nor is it a big pile of mold. It is zeolite, a substance mined locally. Adjacent to the Ash Meadows south entrance is a plant that processes zeolite. It is an absorbant used in the oil industry, in cosmetics and in kitty litter, etc. It does give the area an unearthly appearance.
Looking to the north on the refuge
Here at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge we are just a few miles from the NV/CA border. When one crosses from CA into NV the first thing one sees is this cow and windmill which are on the Longstreet Hotel and Casino property. With gambling a legal entity in NV, it's the first thing one has the 'opportunity' to do. Nearly every road into NV immediately has a casino or, at the very least, a convenience store with slot machines.
Cows and windmills are not normally what one sees on casino grounds. We think, in this case, they are perhaps to let folks know that the Amargosa Valley has a dairy and agricultural farms. It's a pretty unique sight, whatever the reason.
