Final Research Trip to Death Valley - April 9, 2009

This was my final day for this year to visit the curatorial and research center in Death Valley. A perfect day - wildflowers and 69F. It was too good a day not to stop and take photos at every opportunity - well, not every but, many. I will miss this place with the contrasts, formations, textures, stripes, folds, dunes, mountains, canyons, alluvial fans, geology, interesting mining history, desert sunlight varying the colors with the time of day........
Rock Nettle or Sting-BushGravel Ghost or Parachute Plant
The Desert Five-Spot, a common plant in washes in spring. Showy with the five red spots at the interior base of the five petals. View of the salt flats opposite the curatorial and research facility at Cow Creek in Death Valley National Park.
Desert Gold 190 ft. below sea level and snow-capped Telescope Peak at 11,049 ft in the background.
NotchleafPhacelia
Dodder is a parasitic annual vine that twines around the stems of its host. It sends tiny rootlets into the host tissues to absorb water and nutrients.
