Trail Canyon Rd. and Artist Drive in Death Valley - 2/28/2009

Spring is showing colorful beginnings. Notchleaf Phacelia.Nowhere near blooming and nary a bud but interesting foliage......one of the desert Evening Primroses.
Nearly ready to bloom - more interesting foliage......Gravel Ghost will have tiny white flowers.
So many colorful rocks with textures, stripes, folds and more....
Horizontal layers.......
and vertical. Looks like what we call shale back east. This was a huge project first collecting all the rocks then layering and balancing. What fun to come across this cairn. We came across this unexpected canyon-within-a-canyon that was too enticing not to explore on foot.
Too bad. It opened up around this turn and we lost interest.
....so back to motorized transport
Didn't someone have fun finding just the right rock to top this off? Death Valley is the background with the Funeral Range behind. We can't help but wonder if it was the same person(s) who built the cairn.
Artist Drive - a colorful, 9-mile, one-way loop drive on the east side of Death Valley.
One last photo for the day on the east side of the valley between Artist Drive and Furnace Creek.
