V Bar V Heritage Site

March is Archaeology Discovery Month in Arizona.  Many sites are celebrating with special programs.  This weekend the V Bar V Heritage Site, under the auspices of the United States Forest Service, is having  Discovery Days.  We attended today with our friends Sedona residents Donna and Jay.  V Bar V is a rock art site with 1,032 petroglyphs - mindboggling to see.

The morning kicked off with the Yavapai Bird Dancers and Gourd Singers.  This talented group of  young people has been invited to perform in Washington, DC on Memorial Day.  The costumes were colorful with many sequins that twinkled in the sunlight as they moved.

Their songs are Journey songs.  Often they are about hunting, asking for a successful hunt.  They also sing blessing songs, thanking their Creator for what they were able to bring home to the village.

Most of the Gourd Singers were not available to perform today therefore we had this abbreviated group of fine singers.

Here is a longer clip of the Bird Dancers.

Mountain Men reenactors were there to show their way of life.

Hopi piki bread and parched corn, both diet staples, were sold.  This fire and pot were used to do the parched corn demo.

There were many other demos given throughout the day.  Yucca fiber sandals (above), atl -atl throwing, flintknapping, fire by friction, ancient pottery techniques and Hopi basketry were among the many.

Finally, we walked out to view the rock art panels.  Pictures I've seen don't do it justice; neither do these.

Unlike most rock art sites, almost none of the designs overlap.  The site has been linked to shamanism and the intricately decorated rock wall may have played a role in religious and healing ceremonies.  It's an enduring mystery.

Lastly, this chimney is near the visitor center - note the V Bar V brand.
