We took a drive on the Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway as far as Winston then turned off to go the town of Chloride.
Chloride is a privately-owned, former mining town with a sweet museum.
A Gila National Forest route was next.
Very pretty. It follows Chloride Creek and it looked as though the habitat would have been perfect for early indians.
We kept our eyes open.
We found this overhang which would have provided shelter for the Mimbres Indians who lived in the general area from 750 to 1150 AD.
Mimbres pictographs.
Looking out at Vic from the second shelter that we located.
Vic has spotted more pictographs.
Can you see the round dark area which is the shelter?
The entire back wall and ceiling are blackened from the fires they had for warmth and cooking.
Further up the trail we came across the forest service cabin.
It's our guess that it's available by permit.
The entire area at about 7700 ft. would be lovely for camping and hiking.
The ponderosa pines are majestic.
We continued on before another locked gate stopped us from reaching
the continental divide.
Beautiful tour Paula!
