Mimbres Valley to the Gila National Forest

Days don't get much sweeter than today.
Beautiful weather
and
beautiful views
everywhere
we
looked.

We started on this dirt road.
Near the beginning were two signs one which said
"Running Water".
The other said
"Road Closed at River, 11 miles ahead"

You've gotta be kidding.
This is the desert.
RUNNING water?
It's worth driving 11 miles to see this.

In addition it's just too pretty to give up that easily.

Suddenly - antelope again!
This time there were two bucks
and
two does.
They were too near, and on the move, to be able to get out the tripod and long lens.

So,
more blurry antelope.
One day.......

Climbing out of the Mimbres Valley we saw this unusual snowfence.
Well, maybe not unusual here
but
unusual to us.

And tucked into the hills where we would least expect it was this pottery.
The owner was leaving but gave us a quick peek into her sales area and studio - a teaser to bring us back.

And this cool one-lane bridge that was built in 1903.

Such beautiful grasslands

Eventually we reached the Gila National Forest
Pronounced HE-la

After a month in the desert it was nice to be among the junipers and pines.

The road wound for miles through the Mimbres and up into the national forest and was to lead to a mine.
Again,
we were stopped by a locked gate.
We were less than a mile from the mine!

On the return trip we stopped to get a picture of the
running water.
Not much water,
certainly not enough to stop us going through and coming back this way.

Fun to see what a big splash the jeep can make with so little water.

Guess you shouldn't believe everything you read.

For the finale,
a mule deer ran across
and
slowed down just long enough for another blurry photo.
But look at that rack!

One more photo
from
a
few days ago.
